Introduction to Me

Where do I even start. Let’s see, I’m a microbiology major. I love watching movies, spending time with my friends, it doesn’t really matter what we do. I also like watching TV shows like friends, Grey’s Anatomy, the Bachelor/Bachelorette, Modern Family, and I like watching this Spanish soap opera, El Internado. I got into it in high school when we watched it in my Spanish class and I still enjoy watching it. Although I’m not fluent in Spanish I do understand a lot of it and the English subtitles help. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pets because my mom is not a huge fan, I still play with my friends’ dogs any chance I get, because let’s face it dogs are just adorable. I love Italian food so I tend to go there a lot. I’m learning how to cook so I try random recipes I find on the internet that I like, and so far they’re pretty food. I can make some food from Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Indian and Indo-Chinese. I enjoy watching sports, especially football so during football season I’m always watching some sort of game. I love zip lining, river rafting, swimming, tubing, jet skiing. I haven’t been sky diving or para sailing but I would love to go at least once. Traveling is also a huge part of my life, my goal is to go to all 50 states. So far I have only been to 20 states so 30 more to go, and I’ve been to 4 countries including the United States. If I had an extra day for fun I would spent half of it with my family and the other half with my friends. I also like dancing which is why I have started performing at OU in the Indian cultural nights that we have.

  1. That goal of visiting all 50 states is a fun one, Shruti! I have been to a lot of states, but not all of them. The last "new" ones I got to visit were Rhode Island and Maine!

And please keep me posted on India Students Association events: I would definitely like to publicize culture nights and any other activities like that in the class announcements. Dancing is such a great part of Indian culture, and it is a theme you will even see in the epics, like when the hero Arjuna has to spend a year as a dancing master in King Virata's court. Maybe you will even want to do a project for this class about Indian dance: that would be a fabulous topic! :-)

  2. I've never been there but they're on my list! I will both ISA and OUIS have events throughout the year so I'll let you know. That's a great idea although I don't know what I'm doing yet.

  3. We have met before, but we never really talked about our interests. I also enjoy watching the same shows as you, and I love to hang out with friends as well. I actually have a dog, so if you ever want to meet up and meet him sometime, just let me know. I am glad to hear that you love traveling, as do I. I probably haven't traveled to as many states as you have though. I also participate in some of the dance showcases at OU, maybe this year we can be in the same dance!

  4. It’s so cool that you are a microbiology major! I wish I could have been able to follow through with my biology path. It’s also so great that you understand a lot of Spanish as well. I took about 4 or 5 years of Spanish plus I passed my AP exam but I still cannot understand or speak it very well haha. Did you get a better understanding of Spanish through watching many of your soap operas? I ask because the same thing happened to me. I am really into watching k dramas aka Korean dramas (highly recommend btw) and due to that I am able to understand a lot of the words. Ahh it’s so interesting to hear about all of the sports you enjoy! I too love to swim because it’s so relaxing. My family owns a store so we don’t get to travel much but I would love to like you do. The only country I have been to is Vietnam which was where I was born. Oh and lastly, I also very much love pets! I have a Siberian husky named Tigger and he is 5 years old.

  5. Shruti, I love Modern Family too! My family used to all get together on Wednesday nights (when we were home... there are 6 of us) to watch it. My dad also is determined to get me and my siblings to all 50 states in the next few years...every year he plans a big road trip across the US to hit as many states as we can, so I certainly feel you there! What're your favorite dishes to make? I'm a sucker for Mexican food. :)

  6. Hi Shruti! I love Modern Family too! I think that show is hilarious and I love how it's all about one big family! My sister loves Grey's Anatomy, and I think it's pretty good too! I don't even know how many times she's gone throw the whole series...I think she's on her 7th or 8th time rewatching the series. Thank goodness for Netflix! When I took Spanish in high school, we never got a chance to watch any telenovelas, but we did watch Napoleon Dynamite in Spanish with English subtitles and that was a very odd experience. Traveling is so much fun to do! What other countries have you been to? What was your favorite place to visit? I'm excited to read some of your stories!

  7. Hi, Shruti! You sound like such a fun person, and very similar to myself! Is that your daughter in the picture of you? I have a 10 1/2 month old, so I can relate, if that is your daughter. And, Indian Cultural Nights at OU? Please tell me more! I'd love to attend, especially if there's dancing!

  8. It sounds like you live a busy life Shruti! I also love watching modern family and the Bachelorette series. JoJo left me very disappointed this season, I think that she should have chosen James Taylor. I also love dog but had never had one until recently because my mom did not like they either. She had always been so afraid of dogs until she met my dog, Daisy, now she wants puppy of her own.

  9. I really like your goal is visiting all 50 states! It is something that I have thought about doing as well since I am always traveling, but never actually looked and counted to see how many I have been to. I am also a huge dog lover and actually got a dog at college with me. My parents were not too happy at first, but now they love him as well and want him from me.

  10. Hey Shruti! I am very impressed that you have been to 20 of the states so far because I have only been to 8! Although, I hope to travel to many more states throughout my life, as well as more countries in Europe. I have been to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and France so far. I love dogs as well and would be very sad if I didn’t have mine!

  11. Hello Shruti, it's nice to meet you. It's really impressive that you've been to so many different places around the US. I've driven around the US several times but I still don't think I've been to as many states as you have. I love dogs as well and though I don't currently have any living with me, I plan on getting one shortly after I get a job and graduate this year. I hope you have a great semester!

  12. Hi Shruti! El Internado? That sounds really interesting! I am minoring in Spanish, so I take every opportunity that I can to incorporate the language in my life. I think it’s great that you try to incorporate so many different cultures in your life and are interested in a variety of subjects! Also, I completely agree with you- dogs are adorable!

  13. Hi Shruti! That is quite the introduction! I kind of like that you just tried to throw everything out there. It gives me a sense of the different dimensions of your life. What other countries have you traveled to? And did you know that the Italian food changes in the different regions of the country? I studied there last semester and I thought that was so interesting. The bread is one of the most obvious changes!

  14. Wow, what an introduction! You really seem to do everything and want to do even more. You seem very adventurous and motivated. You must love to travel! I don't know how many states I've been to but it is also my goal to visit all 50! I'm from New Mexico so if that's still on your list of states to visit, you HAVE to go in October during the Balloon Fiesta and try our famous Green Chile!

  15. That's such a pretty photo of the Grand Canyon. I never managed to get a good one when I went last Spring--they all seemed so disappointing compared to the real scene! Your goal of travelling to all 50 states is really cool. Every few months I try to get to somewhere new, so that I don't get to antsy here in Oklahoma, but I have a long way to go before I visit every state. Do you like to travel/road trip with friends? I imagine you all watching El Internado in the back of someone's car as you travel to a new state. Sounds just about perfect.

  16. HI Shruti! You sound like a very adventurous person! I am jealous that you've been to twenty states already. That got me counting and I think I've only been to nine. But one of those was Hawaii, twice actually, so that was pretty phenomenal. Have you ever been to Hawaii? I'm also SO JEALOUS that you've been to three countries besides the United States. Sadly, I have never been out of the country. I am dying to go to Spain and Australia though! Also- literally all the shows you watch are fantastic. My personal fave is Grey's Anatomy though!

  17. I love that you want to visit all 50 states! It's incredible that you were able to visit 20 of them already. My family simply travels to visit other family so aside from Dallas and Atlanta, we tend to not travel as much as we would like. I love your selection of T.V. shows as well! I am crazy behind on Grey's Anatomy and need to get up to date on it!

  18. Hey Shruti! I love Friends and Grey’s Anatomy too. I have been dying to watch Modern Family from the beginning, but can’t find anywhere that has all of it (like Netflix, Hulu, etc.)! I also love to travel and have been to Germany three times so far, exploring neighboring countries on each trip! I can’t wait to go back!

  19. It sounds like you enjoy quite a few international things. It's always good to get a broad perspective of the world. I can't imagine a world in which I couldn't read books about/from distant places or try their cuisine. I'm not sure how many states I've been to, but a lot of them I just stayed in for a couple days while visiting relatives. There are a lot of states I want to see again.

  20. Hey Shruti! I'm a biology major and Microbio was one of my hardest classes I had to take, so kudos to you for being able to understand all that! Any way, I think we have a lot in common because most of the shows you listed are my favorites, and I absolutely love Italian food too! You also sound very well traveled! I mean, 20 out of 50 states? Thats really impressive! I was expecting like one or two. Which one would you consider to be your favorite?

  21. Hi Shruti, I've been reading your storybook and realized I had never even read your introduction from the first week of class! I love sports as well. There is always some kind of sport on the tv in my house.... if one of my shows is not on. I still enjoy watching Grey's Anatomy as well. Have you seen the new drama series this season called This is Us? It is another really good one!
Cool picture of the Grand Canyon by the way. I have not visited but it is at the top of my list!

  22. Wow you're involved in so much stuff! Completely agree by the way: dogs are just the best. My goal is also to get to all 50 states! I also want to visit every country on earth but that one is a bit harder to get to, haha. I also study Spanish here, but I am nowhere near fluent enough to watch a soap opera!

  23. I love that you have the goal of visiting all 50 states! I have that goal too! Hopefully it's something we can both accomplish. I think that traveling the world is important, but traveling your own country can be just as exciting!

I also love that you have started performing at OU's Indian cultural nights! It's great that you took something that you really enjoyed and found a way to get involved with it on campus. Good for you!
